Blog #11 Part 2 A School Librarian's Work

Do you remember when I mentioned how remarkable school librarians are? They take on more tasks then we can imagine for the library! Well, I will share some insights from my interview with Mrs. Wendy Calcutt. I've learned quite a bit from this fabulous woman who enjoys being a high school librarian. I gathered with her to ask about her work as it pertains to the following shared foundations: inquire, include, collaborate, and curate. Together, we felt that all the domains and competencies contributed to the shared foundations that she shared about. I learned to pick high schoolers brains with asking an unfamiliar question to move into introducing the new concept after giving them time to think. Mrs. Calcutt has the library set up for all learners so everyone feels included. Each morning, she makes it a goal to engage in conversation before classes start with students as they come in and provide more food for thought for them to think about regardless of their separate circumstances since it'll help them grow in some way. Mrs. Calcutt is most proud of the final projects that students curate after a period of weeks from introducing it. It shows great collaboration between the teacher and her as the librarian when students are able to search responsibly to show independence for their assignment. She enjoys showing media videos to have students determine if it is real or fake news. These factors that she shared will be helpful to me as a librarian because she mentioned to me how cell phones have seem to taken over. It will take way more to get high schoolers intrigued these days then it probably would take to get younger students involved for example and Mrs. Calcutt hinted at this being a challenge for her when having to compete with teens being on their cell phones. If administrators hold students accountable then the usage could go down if it be restricted during certain periods.
